Wind energy sale dips for RG&E, NYSEG in '12

The sale of wind energy by Rochester Gas and Electric Corp. and New York State Electric & Gas Corp. totaled 71.2 million kilowatt-hours in 2012, a decline of 3.8 percent from 2011, company officials said Thursday.

RG&E sold 19 million kwh last year and NYSEG sold 52.2 million. The Iberdrola USA Inc. subsidiaries combined to sell 74 million kwh in 2011, officials said.

Last year’s 71.2 million kwh purchased through the company’s Catch the Wind program were enough to power nearly 6,300 typical homes for one year, officials said.

Nearly 5,700 RG&E customers and more than 15,000 NYSEG customers were enrolled in the program at the end of last year, officials said.

“Offering our customers the opportunity to purchase clean, renewable wind energy is a natural fit with our commitment to environmental stewardship,” RG&E and NYSEG president Mark Lynch said in a statement.

RG&E’s wind energy program began in April 2004; NYSEG’s began in August 2002. They are in partnership with Community Energy Inc., a Boulder, Colo.-based provider of renewable energy.

RG&E serves 362,000 electricity customers and 299,000 natural gas customers in nine counties in the Rochester market. NYSEG provides electricity to 873,000 and natural gas to 259,000, across 40 percent of Upstate New York.

I believe their pricing model is unacceptable and discourages people from signing up for wind energy. What they do is attach a surcharge to the customer's charges for equivalent non-wind energy. It seems to me, if the price of conventional fuel increases, that in itself do...  Read More >

David, you are proposing the liberal solution to everything: give me what I want and make someone else pay for it. There are many things that I want too. Should you be force to subsidize the purchases of what I want?
