A doctor from Rochester is among seven people worldwide honored Monday with the first Golisano Global Health Leadership Awards for their work providing health care to people with intellectual disabilities.

The awards, named for B. Thomas Golisano, the founder of Paychex Inc., were presented to recipients at a ceremony in Schladming, Austria, where the 2017 Special Olympics Winter World Games are being held. The honorees are helping to fulfill the goals, values and mission of Special Olympics' global health program, funded by the Golisano Foundation.

Stephen Sulkes M.D., co-director of the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities at the University of Rochester Medical Center. was the North American recipient of the award.

Sulkes has worked to improve the fitness of Special Olympics New York athletes, the Golisano Foundation said. He founded the Rochester student chapter of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry and encourages students to get involved with Special Olympics, through Healthy Athletes and as event volunteers and coaches.

In addition to the seven 2017 awards, two Pioneer Awards for lifetime achievement were presented to Steven Perlman DDS of Boston and Paul Berman O.D. (posthumously) of Hillsdale, N.J, for founding Special Olympics Healthy Athletes 20 years ago.

The Golisano Foundation has invested $37 million to create and expand Special Olympics Healthy Communities throughout the world. Golisano's gift is the largest received by Special Olympic, and is also the largest single gift ever given by Golisano and his foundation.
