January 15, 2014

New Energy Xcelerator of Upstate New York has announced the results of its first phase of applications, as well as its inaugural board of advisers.

The program has received 56 applications from clean-energy innovators divided by region, including 22 applicants out of Rochester, or 40 percent.

The Southern Tier had 12 applicants or 21 percent; Syracuse had seven applications, or 13 percent; Albany had six applicants, or 10 percent of the pool; Buffalo had two applicants submit, or 3 percent; with the North Country with one application and six applicants from other areas rounding out the total. The application period began on Nov. 25 and closed Dec. 22.

“We were pleasantly surprised with the quantity and quality of applications,” said Doug Buerkle, NEXUS-NY executive director in a statement. “We received many outstanding applications from across the state and across various technologies. There is clearly a very strong demand for the types of resources provided by NEXUS-NY.”

Next, the selection of 12 teams with high commercialization potential will be determined by late January.

With more than $500,000 annually in financial support and various education and training sequences, the program’s goal is to provide support to early-stage technologies for the validation of their commercial potential.

The program’s board of advisers was chosen based on members’ demonstrated expertise in the fields of clean energy and commercialization.

Here is a list of the board of advisers:

  • Juan Becerra, vice president of General Electric Corp.;
  • Somak Chattopadhyay, managing partner of Armor Square Ventures;
  • Arunas Chesonis, chairman and CEO of Sweetwater Energy Inc.;
  • Donald Golini, founder of Sanica Ventures LLC;
  • James Senall, president of High Tech Rochester;
  • William Sheeran, president of LeaJames Inc.; and
  • Christine Whitman, chairman, CEO and president of Complemar Partners Inc.
