Wegmans ranks No. 5 on Fortune's best places to work list

Wegmans Food Markets Inc.  has been named to Fortune’s list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” for the 16th consecutive year.

Officials said the company came in fifth this year, one spot down from 2012. The full list of companies is available exclusively on Fortune’s iPad app and will appear in the Feb. 4 issue of Fortune.

Wegmans has appeared on Fortune’s list every year since it was first published in 1998. It has been ranked in the top 10 for the last 11 years.

The methodology for the list is based on employee surveys that feature questions about pay, benefit programs, hiring practices, training, diversity efforts and more.

“Our employees are the No.1 reason our customers shop at Wegmans,” said CEO Danny Wegman, in a statement. “I’m convinced there is only one path to great customer service, and that is through employees who feel they are cared about and empowered.”

Wegmans also said it will be hiring for new stores set to open in Germantown, Md. in September; Montgomeryville, Pa. in November; and Newton, Mass. in early 2014.
