Pair acquires Rochester & Genesee Valley Parent magazine

Rochester Business Journal
February 13, 2017

After some 24 years at the helm of Rochester & Genesee Valley Parent magazine, founder and owner Barbara Melnyk is retiring, officials said Monday.

The new owners of the magazine, to be called ROC Parent, are Salley Thornton, publisher, and Dresden Engle, managing editor. Thornton is vice president of marketing communications for Toshiba Business Solutions. Engle is director of Dresden Public Relations Inc.

The free publication has been produced since 1994 by Melnyk.

"This has been an incredible journey and it was extremely rewarding to focus on meaningful, award-winning journalism that has helped families meet the challenges of parenthood as well as connect so many great businesses that share that focus in our community," Melnyk said in a statement.

Both Thornton and Engle are former journalists and moms. The pair’s new company is Roc Publishing LLC and based in Brighton.

Thornton and Engle will take over the management starting in the May/June issue. The first publication under their watch will hit newsstands in late April, they said.

New features of the publication will include:

• two magazines in one—on the flip side of the magazine will be She Rocs, a print magazine for Rochester-area women;
• shorter articles;
• new features and columns with a focus on fun and practical tips from fellow moms of babies through teens; and
• more online engagement and video.

The magazine has been available in area grocery stores, libraries, doctor and dentist offices, YMCA branches and sports complexes,. The new owners plan to expand its distribution.

Melnyk's daughter Jillian has been serving as the magazine's editor-in-chief and creative director and now plans to focus on her art and writing career.
