Foodlink makes final funding push for kitchen facility

Foodlink Inc. is looking for contributions from the public to raise the final $600,000 it needs for its new $4.9 million community kitchen.

The organization, which serves a 10-county region in western and central New York, has raised $4.3 million for the facility, which is slated to be complete by late fall.

Foodlink’s kitchen prepares and delivers thousands of meals daily to low-income Rochester children. It will be relocating from Joseph Avenue to Foodlink’s operational headquarters at Mt. Read Boulevard, officials said.

“The new kitchen will help us to reduce waste, optimize our physical space and staffing, and build a stronger culture,” Executive Director Julia Tedesco said in a letter to community members and supporters. “But more importantly, it will dramatically expand Foodlink’s capacity to invest in this region and provide healthy food to those who need it the most.”

More information about the project and how to contribute to its success is available at www.foodlinkny.org.

Also announced Tuesday, Foodlink has been awarded $125,000 in federal funding to expand its Curbside Market food truck program and Lexington Avenue urban farm, said Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both D-N.Y.

The funding is expected to allow Foodlink to increase its capacity to produce fresh food as well as purchase a new vehicle that will allow customers in wheelchairs and walkers to shop for food on the truck.
