Joint venture to bring jobs to Eastman Business Park

A joint venture between United Kingdom-based Naturally Scientific Inc. and BCW Chemicals LLC of Brooklyn will set up at Eastman Business Park to create plant and vegetable oils for industrial needs and create 170 jobs, officials announced Monday.

Naturally Scientific US will occupy Building 211 at the business park sometime in 2014, creating 50 jobs by 2016 and 170 by 2018, officials said. It will lease and renovate the 69,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. Its oils will be used in a variety of industrial applications, they said.

Naturally Scientific US will receive a capital loan of $6 million through the Empire State Development Corp. and a $2 million New York Works loan to help fund the $10 million project, officials said.

“We see this as another important step in the creation of an overall biomaterials innovation cluster here at Eastman Business Park,” Director Michael Alt said. “Attracting more companies in this space could create a significant number of jobs and, in turn, help to revitalize our community and make the region more competitive.”

The venture will use newly developed patented technology to make oils from renewable hydrocarbon produced by Rochester-based Sweetwater Energy Inc., officials said.

Naturally Scientific and Sweetwater announced a joint venture last month to produce sugar from waste carbon dioxide.

In April, Sweetwater announced a 15-year agreement valued at $250 million with Naturally Scientific to supply industrial sugars.

Naturally Scientific has spent five years creating its modular, rapid-growth and high-yield bio-manufacturing platform, officials said. Its demonstration plant in Nottingham, U.K., has been operational for two years.

BCW Chemicals was formed in December 2012 in Monroe County, a filing with the state Department of State states.

“Advanced manufacturing of bio-materials is a perfect fit for Eastman Business Park and I’m pleased to see this company grow and create jobs in Rochester,” ESDC President, CEO and Commissioner Kenneth Adams said.
