The University of Rochester Medical Center on Tuesday opened a Brockport urgent care center.
The medical center has redubbed the facility, opened in the former Lakeside Memorial Hospital building on West Avenue, Strong West Urgent Care.
Strong West is limited to treating non-life-threatening conditions such as sprains, lacerations, colds, fevers and sore throats. Services offered include diagnostic imaging and strep tests.
The Brockport facility initially will be open daily from noon to 7 p.m. URMC hopes to expand the facility’s hours soon, said Michael Kamali M.D., URMC emergency medicine chairman.
URMC, which also has taken over operation of Lakeside’s Spencerport urgent care center, is seeking state approval to convert the Brockport urgent care center to a full, freestanding emergency department that would serve as an adjunct of Strong Memorial Hospital’s emergency department.
“What we’re really planning for is the opening of the freestanding emergency department in January,” Kamali said. “That will be a full-service emergency department to serve the emergent needs of patients in this area.”
