Some customers will be able to complete their grocery shopping online with orders delivered to their homes thanks to a partnership between Wegmans Food Markets Inc. and Instacart, a grocery delivery service based in San Francisco.
The service is available at Wegmans locations in Northern Virginia and Maryland.
There are no immediate plans to launch the service in New York, however, additional markets for the service will be evaluated along a variety of factors such as customer demand, Wegmans said.
“We know our customers are busy, and that any found time in their week can make a difference. That’s where we can help—by giving them the option to have Wegmans delivered fresh to their door,” said Heather Pawlowski, vice president of e-commerce at Wegmans. “By partnering with an industry leader like Instacart, we’re able to provide our customers with a seamless shopping experience with the quality and service they’ve come to expect from Wegmans, without leaving their house.”
The delivery window for the service is at minimum an hour. Customers can make orders up to a week in advance of delivery.
Same-day delivery from Wegmans is offered at the Alexandria, Fairfax, Dulles and Leesburg stores in Virginia, and at the Columbia, Hunt Valley, Ownings Mills, Crofton, Woodmore and Germantown stores in Maryland, officials said. The first Instacart delivery is free for new customers. It is $5.99 after the first delivery on orders of $35 or more.
There is an Instacart Express membership for customers that allow free one-hour deliveries on orders over $35 for an annual fee. The membership has a free trial period and costs $99 to $149 annually depending on the location.
For Instacart, the deal is a major turning point for the firm.

This partnership is a milestone for Instacart, allowing us to bring the products Wegmans customers love straight to their doorstep.”
