Rochester receives letter gauging interest in hosting Olympics

The U.S. Olympic Committee says Rochester is among 35 cities they're considering for the 2024 Summer Olympic bid, RBJ news partner News10 NBC is reporting.

Rochester Mayor Tom Richards said he received the letter, which reads: “We explore this exciting possibility; we are actively seeking to gauge the interest of U.S. Cities that may have the ability to host an event with the scope and scale of the Olympic games.”

The USOC letter inviting 2024 interest includes some of the basic requirements for hosting a games:, including 45,000 hotel rooms, an international airport, an Olympic village that sleeps 16,500 and has a 5,000-person dining hall, a workforce of up to 200,000 and more.

 “I think that's nice but as a practical matter, we're not really in the running,” Richards told News10 NBC. (For the full story, visit whectv.com.)

The International Olympic Committee’s deadline for applying isn’t until 2015.
