Monroe County gasoline prices have shown improvement in the last month but remain higher than a year ago, a weekly survey by GasBuddy.com shows.

The average price of gas in Rochester was $3.80 in the last week, down 3 cents from a week ago, but up 28 cents from a year ago. Since Jan. 9 the average price of gas locally has risen 28 cents a gallon.

Nationally, the average price of gas was $3.39 a gallon in the last week, down from $3.43 a gallon the previous week, but up slightly from $3.34 a gallon in January. Gas prices nationally are down more than 11 cents a gallon from a year ago.

“While the national average continues to fall, we’ve done the math: The yearly average in 2012 is all but guaranteed to set all-time record highs,” GasBuddy.com senior petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan said.

Gas prices would need to average $2.35 a gallon every day for the remainder of the year for the yearly average price to drop below that of 2011, DeHaan said.

GasBuddy.com expects holiday gas prices to average $3.25 a gallon to $3.35 a gallon nationally.

GasBuddy operates more than 250 websites tracking gas prices at more than 140,000 stations nationwide, including RochesterGasPrices.com. In Rochester, GasBuddy tracks price changes at more than 300 retail outlets.
