Frontier gets FCC funding to invest in broadband network

Frontier Communications Corp. Wednesday said it will invest $7.9 million in its broadband network in New York State—dollars allotted from the Federal Communication Commission’s Connect America Fund.

The capital for the communications company will provide broadband availability to 13,928 households over the course of three years.

Broadband will be expanded and strengthened in the following counties of Frontier’s service areas:

  • Western New York – Allegany, Cattaraugus, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Wyoming and Yates counties;
  • Central New York – Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Oswego, Otsego, Steuben and Tioga counties; and
  • Upstate and Eastern New York – Clinton, Essex, Fulton, Jefferson, Montgomery, Oswego, Saratoga and Warren counties.

Frontier applied for the funding in August and it supplements the $2.2 billion of private capital the company spent since July 2010 to improve network infrastructure and distribute broadband access to rural areas. The funds are expected to be released by the end of this month.

 “The additional funds from the CAF program allow Frontier to accelerate our already robust broadband build-out and network upgrade program for New York,” said Kevin Smith, senior vice president and general manager of Frontier’s New York operations. “We will continue to invest aggressively in rural America during 2014. Frontier seeks every opportunity to increase broadband availability in its rural, high-cost, low-density areas.”

Frontier employs 13,900 people across 27 states. In Rochester the company has approximately 1,400 employees.
