Thomas Golisano is on the move.

The Paychex Inc. founder and chairman saw his net worth rise this year reaching No. 296 on the Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans. Golisano was listed as having $1.9 billion.

Last year Golisano placed No. 298 on the list, just a year after seeing his rank fall to No. 332. He began to rise thanks to the sale of the Buffalo Sabres for $189 million to fellow billionaire Terrence Pegula, who this year finished No. 161 on the list with $3.1 billion.

Kimberly Pegula, Terrence Pegula’s wife, is a native of Fairport.

Golisano peaked on the Forbes 400 list in 2007, when he ranked No. 289 with a total net worth of $2 billion.

To compile the list and determine total assets, Forbes meets with candidates and conducts a wide range of interviews with employees, handlers, peers and even ex-spouses. The list also uses Securities and Exchange Commission documents, court records, probate records, federal financial disclosures, and Web and print stories.

Microsoft Corp. founder William Gates finished No. 1 on the list for the 20th consecutive year. His net worth is $72 billion, up from $66 billion last year and $59 billion in 2011.

In March, Golisano fell 77 spots to No. 931 on the Forbes list of the World’s Billionaires.
