A newly constructed $9.9 million Emergency Department was dedicated Friday at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital.

Named in honor of the Dr. Daniel Alexander Family Foundation, the department will begin to see patients Wednesday morning, Rochester General Health System officials said Friday.

“This emergency department is the most significant addition to the medical infrastructure of Wayne County in decades,” said Mark Klyczek, hospital president, in a statement. “The people who live in our community now have a state-of-the-art resource for their moment of greatest personal need.”

The new ED is the centerpiece of the hospital’s $13.1 million major modernization project. The Wayne County hospital’s emergency department last year saw some 23,000 patients, more than twice its 11,000 patient a year designed capacity.

In addition to being able to accommodate more patients, the ED features all board-certified emergency physicians, the latest in cardiac monitoring and other specialized emergency equipment and improved access to the specialists both at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital and at Rochester General Hospital.

An orthopedic surgeon and owner of the Finger Lakes Bone and Joint Center, Daniel Alexander M.D. helped finance the expansion. RGHS officials declined to state the gift’s amount.

This month Finger Lakes Medical Associates LLP OB-GYN physicians pulled out of Finger Lakes Health System’s Geneva General Hospital and moved their practice to Newark-Wayne Community Hospital.
