Carestream Health Inc. on Thursday wrapped up two days of meetings and presentations for some 150 vendors serving the Rochester-based medical imaging firm.
Carestream has held supplier conferences since 1998, beginning the practice when it was still part of Eastman Kodak Co. Now a private company owned by Toronto-based Onex Corp., Carestream employs 1,200 locally and 7,000 worldwide. It stated revenues of $2.4 billion last year.
The Rochester event, held at Carestream’s Verona Street headquarters, is one of several the company holds around the globe each year, said Richard Morabito, Carestream chief purchasing officer.
In addition to the U.S. event here, Carestream holds similar conferences in Paris for European suppliers and in Shanghai for Asian vendors, as well as smaller supplier events in several smaller countries. The annual supplier conferences are a continuation of similar events he first held as a Xerox Corp. purchasing official in 1993, Morabito added
Attendees at this year’s Rochester conference included manufacturers of components and materials as well as non-manufacturing companies ranging from office-supplies vendors to construction companies, benefits advisers and law firms.
Local firms participating in this week’s event include Optimation Technology Inc., LeChase Construction Services LLC and FM Office Express Inc.
The conferences serve both to let suppliers know what Carestream expects of them and for Carestream to glean tips to help improve its supply chain and manufacturing processes.
“If we’re buying something from somebody that makes it, we remember that they know more about the product than we do,” Morabito said.
Volatile political and economic conditions in recent years have made management of Carestream’s global supply chain an increasingly tricky business, Morabito said. In regions where the economy or political climate shows signs of instability, he said, the company has to be ready to quickly shift vendors.
