The PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club in August generated $102.1 million for the Rochester-area economy, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday.

The tournament created 1,800 temporary, full-time and part-time jobs, Cuomo said. The results surpassed projections of a $78 million economic impact and 1,127 jobs.

“Rochester was put on an international stage with the 95th PGA Championship, which attracted golf fans from around the world and resulted in a tremendous economic boost for the region from tourism spending to jobs,” Cuomo said in a statement.

Some 225,000 spectators attended the event from Aug. 5-11, with 70,000 coming from at least 100 miles away, Cuomo said. Non-local ticket holders spent some $58.2 million—an average of $345 per spectator per day—on tickets, hotel expenses, restaurants, transportation, and merchandise and concessions, he said.

“This positive economic impact is a tribute to the numerous state and local organizations that collaborated to host a premier golf event of this magnitude,” said Mark Peterson, president and CEO of Greater Rochester Enterprise Inc.

“The region showed beautifully, and we could not be more thrilled with the tremendous benefits this event generated for our community.”
