Rochester gas prices rise as the nation pays less

Rochester Business Journal
April 5, 2013

While the nation’s average gas price decreased during the first quarter compared with a year ago, Rochester residents actually paid more.

A new report by GasBuddy, an online gasoline price checking company, said that the nation’s average first quarter gas price was around $3.55 a gallon, down from $3.58 during the first quarter 2012.

Rochester ranked fifth among metropolitan areas that saw the largest increase in average gas price during that period. GasBuddy estimated Rochester’s average gas price rose just more than 5 cents a gallon. As of Friday, GasBuddy listed Rochester’s average gas price at $3.83, down almost 2 cents from its previous listing.

Ranking ahead of Rochester for the largest increase during the first quarter were Pueblo, Colo., Utica-Rome, Greeley, Colo., and Burlington, Vt. The city with the largest decrease was Anchorage, Alaska, with a dip of 6.2 percent.

Honolulu had the highest average gas price for the first quarter at $4.16 a gallon; Casper, Wyo. had the lowest average price at $2.87.

GasBuddy pointed out the average national gas price in 2009 was under $1.90 a gallon.
