Exelis Inc.’s Geospatial Systems division has been awarded a $1.54 million grant from Empire State Development Corp. to help offset costs related to an $11.9 million relocation project.

In December, the company completed renovations to its new headquarters at the Rochester Techncology Park in Gates after moving the majority of its local operations from St. Paul Street in the city. The project included creating office, lab and light manufacturing space.

The project retained roughly 500 jobs, the state agency reported.

Exelis, which does business under the name ITT Exelis, ranked fourth on the most recent Rochester Business Journal list of optics and imaging firms with 1,182 workers.

In August, County of Monroe Industrial Development Agency approved sales tax breaks totaling $425,600 for the company for renovations and equipment at three locations, including two buildings at the Rochester Technology Park.

The projected community benefit is more than $4 million, COMIDA representatives said.
