Mark Zupan will step down as dean on the Simon School of Business after the end of the school year, the University of Rochester announced Wednesday. Zupan said he plans to serve as dean until June 30, 2014, and then take a one-year sabbatical.

In a letter to the university community, Zupan said he plans to serve as dean until June 30, 2014, and then take a one-year sabbatical. When he returns, Zupan will become the John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics and Public Policy and director of the Bradley Policy Research Center at Simon.

In his letter to the university, Zupan cited the growth the Simon School has seen, including record enrollment of students and more than $62 million raised through supporters for the university's $1.2 billion Meliora Campaign.

"Their support has allowed us to add 10 new professorships to a base of nine that existed prior to the campaign," Zupan wrote. "We have added $1.1 million in annual philanthropic scholarship support to a pre-existing base of $440,000 per year for a total of over $1.5 million that we can now award with each academic year."

Zupan said he plans to work on a succession plan for the new dean.

Correction:

An earlier version of this story incorrectly said Mark Zupan will retire as dean at the end of the school year.
