The Finger Lakes region will get $96.2 million—the highest total awarded to any of the 10 economic development councils—from the second round of state aid and incentives for economic development projects, officials announced Wednesday.
The award is the result of a progress report and list of priority projects submitted in September by the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council.
"These funds represent a crucial investment in our plans to create 50,000 new jobs in the region over the next five years," said Joel Seligman and Danny Wegman, Finger Lakes council co-chairmen. "We take particular pride in the fact that the state singled out our region’s strategic plan for recognition."
The Finger Lakes council lists the Eastman Business Park as its top priority for economic development.
The University of Rochester’s Health Sciences Center for Computational Innovation is second on the list, followed by the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at Rochester Institute of Technology and the PathStone Finger Lakes Enterprise Fund.
Redevelopment of the vacant Midtown Tower in downtown Rochester is fifth on the list, followed by the College Town development at UR and the Multiple Pathways to Middle Skills Jobs initiative.
The Finger Lakes Business Accelerator Cooperative ranks eighth, followed by the Science Technology and Advanced Manufacturing Park , the Seneca AgBio Green Energy Park, the Finger Lakes Clinical Quality Improvement Initiative and the Finger Lakes Small Business Expansion Fund.
"Receiving the largest award in this year’s competition is a significant win for our community and confirms that the collaborative efforts of our regional partners are paying off”, said Sandra Parker, president and CEO of the Rochester Business Alliance Inc. “Through the development of a strong strategic plan for economic development, the Finger Lakes region is well on the path toward creating thousands of new jobs in the coming years."
