Wegmans LPGA Championship to return here in 2013

The Wegmans LPGA Championship, its future in doubt at the end of its two-year contract in 2012, will return to Rochester next summer, officials announced Tuesday.

The 2013 event is June 6 to 9 at Locust Hill Country Club.

The LPGA Championship has been played here since 2010, after Wegmans Food Markets Inc. agreed to sponsor one of the tour’s four major events after the McDonald's LPGA in Maryland was discontinued.

Wegmans and tournament representatives here have been negotiating with the LPGA since the last contract expired.

“The success of the tournament is contingent upon the support from the Rochester corporate community, and we could not have a better partner than Wegmans,” tournament co-chairman Gerald Stahl said in a statement.

The return of the LPGA Championship gives Rochester two majors in 2013. The men’s PGA Championship is scheduled for Aug. 8 to 11 at Oak Hill Country Club.

“We are pleased to be title sponsor of the Wegmans LPGA Championship for 2013 and to be part of Rochester’s unprecedented summer of major championship golf,” Wegmans president Colleen Wegman said in the statement.

“The world’s best golfers will all be competing here, and the Finger Lakes region will be center stage for major championship golf.”
