2014 Wegmans LPGA Championship moving to Monroe Golf Club

The 2014 Wegmans LPGA Championship will be played in August at Monroe Golf Club in Pittsford, officials said Thursday.

The one-year agreement between the LPGA and tournament officials was reached Wednesday, officials said.

The championship is slated for Aug. 14 to 17, 2014, to accommodate the LPGA schedule, a statement from Wegmans LPGA representatives said.

The local event was played at Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford for 37 years.

The change was made because the LPGA wants to rotate the Rochester event among other venues “to take advantage of the rich heritage of golf courses in the Finger Lakes region, and as a way to bring new interest to the tournament and a new experience to the players,” Wegmans LPGA officials said.

“The LPGA is thrilled and grateful to continue our longstanding partnership with Wegmans, the Rochester region and the golf fans that have shown us such incredible support and hospitality over so many years,” LPGA commissioner Michael Whan said in the statement.

Monroe Golf Club is ranked by Golf Week magazine as one of the top 100 classic golf courses in the U.S., officials said.

“We are so grateful to the membership at Locust Hill Country Club, to our sponsors and to the many volunteers for all their support and effort over the past 37 years,” tournament co-chairman Gerald Stahl said in the statement. “There have been many memories over that time period that will last the community a lifetime.”
