Pa. firm acquires Main Tire Exchange

Pennsylvania-based McCarthy Tire Service Co. has purchased Main Tire Exchange Inc., of Dansville, Livingston County.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed, but the acquisition will increase McCarthy Tire’s operation to 43 service centers in seven states, including Main Tire’s locations in Dansville, Rochester and Buffalo.

A McCarthy Tire spokesman said the company expects to keep the majority of Main Tire’s employees, increasing the number of staffers companywide to 900. He noted Main Tire’s co-owner Timothy Shay will remain in a management position with the company. Co-owner Jon Shay is not joining McCarthy Tire.

McCarthy Tire is a family-owned business with its headquarters in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The company declined to discuss revenues, but in a 2010 interview with the Rochester Business Journal, Main Tire officials said revenues were in the $15 million range.

“This acquisition will allow us to improve our service coverage area and enhance our relationship with our commercial customers in the New York and northeastern region,” McCarthy Tire president John McCarthy Jr. said in a statement. “With an exceptional heritage of strong customer service and state-of-the-art service centers, the Main Tire acquisition was a natural choice for growing the McCarthy Tire family.”

Main Tire operates a tire retread business, as well as a maintenance facility in Dansville and a 200-unit storage facility.
