MVP Healthcare to eliminate 100 positions

MVP Healthcare plans to eliminate 100 positions, MVP officials said Friday.

The company intends to notify affected employees over the next few days. Job eliminations would be made by attrition and leaving unfilled positions vacant wherever possible, CEO Denise Gonick said.

With a total staff of some 1,500, MVP employs some 590 in Rochester, the company’s largest concentration of workers outside of its Schenectady home base. MVP is the Rochester area’s second-largest health insurer. The region accounts for nearly 200,000 of its 600,000 New York enrollees.

While job cuts are regrettable, the pressures of a changing marketplace as greater numbers of enrollees seek coverage individually in the state’s insurance exchange mean the company has to pare operations, Gonick said.

“We have to keep our health plans affordable in a very competitive marketplace,” Gonick said. “The health insurance industry is going through a time of unprecedented change, and we need a streamlined and nimble organization to stay ahead of the curve.”
