A former area International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers official has been convicted of double-billing the union for expenses to collect some $39,000 in illegitimate payments from the union, federal officials said Wednesday.

Mark Valerio pled guilty in U.S. District Court in Rochester on Wednesday to a charge of failure to maintain records. Elected president of IBEW Local 249 in Geneva in 2003, he resigned in 2012. The conviction bars Valerio from serving in a union leadership post for 13 years.

Valerio, 57, of Macedon, Wayne County, served simultaneously as the IBEW local’s president and on the executive board of IBEW System Council U-7. He submitted identical expense vouchers to the local and the council, said Craig Gestring, the Rochester office assistant U.S. Attorney, who prosecuted the case. Valerio in some cases collected duplicate expenses from the union and his employer, Gestring added.

Valerio could draw as much as a year in prison and a $10,000 fine when is appears before U.S. Magistrate Jonathan Feldman for sentencing slated for Dec. 2.
