Excellus BlueCross BlueShield recognized four area hospitals as a Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care in the areas of spine surgery and knee and hip replacement.

Unity Health System's Unity Hospital, the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Highland Hospital and Rochester General Health System's Rochester General Hospital are being recognized for their knee and hip replacement programs, Excellus officials said. URMC’s Strong Memorial Hospital is recognized for its spine surgery program.

Since 2006, the Blue Distinction program has lauded hospitals delivering quality care in bariatric surgery, cardiac care, complex and rare cancers, knee and hip replacements, spine surgery and transplants. The program recently expanded to include new cost-efficiency measures, as well as more robust quality measures focused on improved patient health and safety, Excellus officials said.

“Local hospitals continue to prove that you can offer high quality care at an affordable price,” said Martin Lustick M.D., Excellus senior vice president and corporate medical director. “The Blue Distinction recognition continues our collaborations with local providers, as we jointly tackle issues such as improving quality of care and reducing readmissions and hospital-acquired infections.”
