Gannett Co. Inc. has appointed a State University College of Geneseo alum who previously worked at Channel 13 in Rochester as vice president of news for Gannett Broadcasting.

Ellen Crooke will join current vice president of news for the company Michael Valentine in overseeing news functions for Gannett Broadcasting’s 46 stations.

Gannett Co. Inc. is parent of the Democrat and Chronicle Media Group in Rochester and USA Today.

“Ellen is a passionate and innovative leader who is committed to reinventing local journalism in this digital age,” said David Lougee, president of Gannett Broadcasting in a statement. “We're excited to have her on the corporate team.”

Crooke previously served as news director at WXIA-TV in Atlanta and as a regional news executive. She got her start with the company as vice president of news for WGRZ-TV in Buffalo and has been with the company for 12 years, officials said.

Crooke was news director at WNDU-TV in South Bend, Ind. before joining Gannett. She also worked as a news producer in Rochester at WOKR-TV (WHAM-TV, Channel 13).
