VirtualScopics Inc.’s board has appointed Eric Converse president and CEO of the medical image analysis firm, effective immediately.

Converse, 48, has served as interim CEO of the company since last October, after then CEO Jeffrey Markin stepped down. Converse joined the board of directors in August 2013.

“I’m absolutely thrilled, and the reason why I’m thrilled is because as I’ve said from the beginning there’s so much potential in this team and there’s so much talent and the way the year has been going it’s just showing that when you unleash this talent and let them actually do what they’re good at doing you’re getting great success,” Converse said.

Changes at the company have been extensive.

“Not only are our bookings showing (success) but also you can just see our technology our systems (and) the morale within the company has been greatly improved and I just think we have everyone growing in the same direction and you can‘t help but get excited about that,” Converse said.

Converse has directly contributed to the company’s progress forward, board members said.

“During the past nine months, Eric has clearly demonstrated his leadership and team-building skills on a number of fronts and has earned the respect and cooperation from VirtualScopics’ senior management team, employees, industry thought leaders and customers,” said Charles Phelps, chairman of VirtualScopics, in a statement.

“His contributions to the company thus far include negotiating a global operational and commercialization alliance with Ixico plc, working closely with VirtualScopics and Ixico senior management to form a joint Scientific Advisory Board to benefit both companies, and the recent opening of a joint office in New Hope, Pa.,” Phelps said.

Before becoming interim CEO of VirtualScopics, Converse was managing director of Nedamco Capital, a privately held international investment firm based in the Netherlands.

Converse stuck out as a strong contender, Phelps said.

“With the assistance of Korn Ferry International, the board of directors conducted an extensive search that brought forward numerous candidates with strong skills and backgrounds, a number of whom eagerly sought the CEO position at VirtualScopics,” Phelps said. “In the board's judgment, the leadership demonstrated by Eric during his term as interim CEO made it clear that he was the best choice to take the company forward."
